The company I work for, Innovative Technology, Ltd., recently launched a new product at called Ship-Mate. It's a temperature controlled shipping container for chilled fresh semen used in artificial insemination.
One of our VPs is a dog breeder (cute little frenchie bulldogs) and offers a stud service. He's shipped fresh semen to frenchie breeders all over the country. He found many of the shipping containers on the market were just not reliable. He would loose shipments to either the semen freezing or getting too warm. This would cost him and his clients hundreds if not thousands of dollars. So he set out to find a better solution, and over the course of a few years Ship-Mate was developed.
Once the semen is placed inside the Ship-Mate, it's placed inside an insulated shipping carton surrounded by frozen gel ice packs. The electronics inside the Ship-Mate will monitor the temperature and control the rate of cooling to prevent thermal shock to the semen. Once the semen has cooled down to around 5°C it's kept there for the duration of the trip.
I don't think I've ever typed the word "semen" or learned so much about shipping it as I have in the last few months. Ha.
Note: I work in the programming department at ITL. I posted this because I think this is an interesting product and I wanted you to know about it. If you have any questions about the Ship-Mate, please feel free to talk to James at our office. Contact information is listed at the website. - Thanks, K.
