And Then Forbidden Planet
The hardest part about doing the #blogmonth challenge is taking the time to write and post when you really don’t want to. It was a long workday, as Tuesdays typically are. Part of, if not nearly all, of the week at work revolves around Tuesdays. It’s not overly stressful, just busy. By 5 o’clock, I’m ready to get home and nap on the couch.
But not today; I had to run to Walmart after work. I was there a little over an hour, running from one end of the store to the other. I think I’m starting to get a touch of PTSD every time I go into Walmart. It’s the beeping. For any of you who have worked or currently work at Walmart, you know what beeping I’m talking about. You hear it all day, you hear it in every training video, and you think you hear it when you get home.
Anyway.
Donna and I watched Forbidden Planet tonight. It’s a great movie. Very much worth watching. Add it to your sci-fi list. Visually, it’s a movie ahead of its time. Anne Francis’ dresses in this movie are glamorous and iconic.
Unfortunately, we were not in the mood to take this movie seriously. Minor spoilers coming up. If you haven’t seen this sci-fi classic yet, please do. You can find it on Tubi today.
Forbidden Planet Official Trailer (1956)
A few things got under our skin as we watched, and we just couldn’t let it go. This movie was written in the 1950s, and it shows. Technology has advanced to interstellar travel; humanity is colonizing the vast corners of space, and the crew of the United Planets Cruiser C-57D is made up entirely of white men straight out of WWII movie. They’ve developed faster-than-light travel, yet are absolutely amazed at Robby the Robot. They’ve developed laser weapons, and yet still have a cord for the microphone on their belt communicators. AND the very first woman they meet … they hit on her… immediately.
Oh, this movie has some flaws, but that’s only because we’re looking at it 70 years after it was made.
