5/21 #blogmonth - STR-DH550

We replaced our old Pioneer with a new Sony STR-DH550 5.2ch AV Receiver last night. I used our existing speakers so the install went smoothly. Well you can’t have new equipment without a hiccup or two. The first hiccup came when I discovered the AVR will only work with powered (active) subwoofers. So it doesn’t work with our existing one (passive subwoofer). I found a quick workaround until I can get a new active one. Our current subwoofer is now split with center channel, so we have a little more bass. (probably not recommended, but this is just temporary) I really liked the auto config options. You plug in a microphone (provided with unit), place it where you sit, let it run though it’s sound check, and it sets up your AVR. I did tweak the settings a little afterward, but it was pretty much spot on. (lack of subwoofer made me tweak settings). What sold me on this AVR was the 4 HDMI ins on it. No more external HDMI switch box (sort of). Which brings us to the second hiccup. Sometimes it won’t switch to DirecTV after we power everything off and back up again. Not sure why it’s doing that. Some sort of communications issue I think. Could be as simple as changing settings on TV or DirecTV box, or even a new HDMI cable. Will dig into it more later. Once you get everything working, it works great all day. It has a nice simple remote, which is also a big plus. So for the day we’ve had this (minus the two hiccups), we really like our new Sony STR-DH550 5.2ch AV Receiver.
