Have a Potato
We watched another old horror movie I’ve never seen: This Old Dark House (1932). It was very atmospheric, dark, and peculiar. I liked it. It had some campy elements, so much so that I kept expecting Joel, Crow, and Servo to pop up. Alas, this one didn’t get screened on the Satellite of Love.
James Whale directed this. He was the same director behind the horror classics Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and The Bride of Frankenstein. Raymond Massey and Gloria Stuart start off as the bickering leads, until Melvyn Douglas, Boris Karloff, Ernest Thesiger, Eva Moore, Charles Laughton, and Lilian Bond come in to steal the scene. John Elspeth Dudgeon and Brember Wills round out this unique cast.
Boris Karloff and Ernest Thesiger would later appear in The Bride of Frankenstein. The beautiful Gloria Stuart would be in Titanic 65 years later.
It took a little digging to find this movie. I found a nice version on YouTube. There is also a remake in 1963 starring Tom Poston and Janette Scott. I’ll have to watch that sometime.
